The sixth game of the ICC World T20 will be played between Australia and
Pakistan at Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Pakistan will go into the
game having played their first game against Bangladesh and a lot will depend on
how the game against the Bangladeshis goes.
For one, if the Pakistan team beats Bangladesh and go on to lose this
one, they will still be in with a chance to get through to the next round -
depending on their net run rate. Having said that, if Pakistan are stunned by
the Bangladeshis in the first game, and then go onto lose this as well, they
will be out of the tournament in the very first round. To me, of all the groups
in the tournament, this one looks closest to the group of death, and though
it is not as bad as what Australia faced last year - Sri Lanka and West Indies
in their group - it could get rather interesting, if Bangladesh play some quality
cricket.
Click for Live Score Card of Australia Vs PakistanOne must understand that this will be the fourth successive match on the same
ground, and the second one on the same pitch. Whatever the basic nature of the
wicket will be, it would mean that the sides will want to go into the game with
some frontline spinners.
For Pakistan, there is no issue with having the spinners. Already, they have
Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal, both of whom finished in the top four
of the bowlers' list in the second edition of the tournament. To add to that,
if Mohammad Hafeez plays, he will add up to the numbers and act as the third
spinner in the side, and make batting as difficult as he can.
However, the issues are with the Australian side, who have a couple of spinners
in their ranks, but none of them frontline. This includes Nathan Hauritz
and Steven Smith, but both of them could get pulverised by a team that feeds
off spinners.
This could mean that Australia decide to attack with the pace quartet of the
likes of Dirk Nannes, Shaun Tait, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson,
with a spinner to back them up. The only issue with that is that there could
be a lot of oneness to the attack, and with Brett Lee out of the squad due to
injury, it could get interesting.
It is the Aussie batting that needs to click to get going, but for now, it
looks like it is over dependent on Dave Warner. Time for Clarke and company
to get going!
