Australia have dominated the World Cup in recent years, reaching the final
in 1996 and winning the tournament in 1999, 2003 and 2007. When the Cricket
World Cup was first held in the subcontinent, about two and a half decades
ago, the Kangaroos, led by the talismanic Allan Border, clinched their first
world title. They lost to Sri Lanka in the finals of the 1996 event, which was
the last World Cup in the subcontinent.

Australia lost both their warm up games in the lead up to the tournament to
India and South Africa and their batsmen displayed a worrying vulnerability
to spin bowling in both fixtures. Zimbabwe bowling coach Heath Streak
would have noticed that and the Africans will be relying heavily on tweakers
Graeme Creamer and Ray Price to stifle the Australian batting.
