After their recent hammering at the hands of both South
Africa and New Zealand in back to back serieses Bangladesh
will be hoping to restore pride and confidence in their ranks with a strong
performance against mimmows Ireland in the first one dayer of the three
match series beginning this coming Tuesday 18th March 2008 in Mirpur.
Bangladesh have been dismal in both forms of the game since the World Cup in
2007 and confidence in the camp seems to have taken a huge dip down after a
brilliant World Cup where they want past the likes of India and South Africa.
Since then Bangladesh have lost five test matches and eleven one dayers on a
stretch and resemble a side low on confidence and form. Their batting has remained
a big concern over this period with no one giving an able hand to Captain Mohammad
Ashraful. Ashraful himself hasn't been at the peak of his game and considering
how much the Bangladeshi's game revolves around the elegant right hander, he
will be hoping to strike form against Ireland this time around.
Ireland on the other hand have gone from strength and strength
over the past year and after ruffing Pakistan in the Cricket 2007 World Cup,
the Irish outfit will be hoping to take a big step towards moving into the elite
league of international cricket. Ireland come into this clash on the back of
a fine test win over UAE in the ICC intercontinental Cup in a thumping nine
wicket win in under four days. Ireland have benefited a lot from the participation
of their players in domestic competitions in England and will be hoping to use
their resilient bowling attack and fielding poweress to good effect against
Bangladesh in the One Day Series.
Aftab Ahmed and all-rounder Mahmudullah are the only changes
in the Bangladesh squad. They will be replacing Syed Rasel and Mosharraf Hossain,
who featured in the recent one-day series against South Africa primarily on
the basis of their superior batting abilities. Aftab has recovered sufficiently
from a shoulder injury suffered during the recently concluded Test Series against
South Africa and the young dasher will be hoping to reaffirm his potential with
a fine performance against Ireland. Ireland will be missing speedster Boyd Rankin
for this series through a knee injury. The lanky fast bowler will be missed
by the Irish as they look to reaffirm their status as one of the new forces
of International cricket with by taking the lead in the first One Dayer
against Bangladesh in Mirpur this coming Tuesday 18th March 2008.
