A fabulous performance at Mohali by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his troops
condemned Australia to one of their biggest defeats ever as India took a slamming
1-0 lead in the three match test series. In a brutual display of aggression
and intent, the Indians were on top from ball one and the huge three hundred
eighty seven run victory over the reigning World Champions will certainly
give them confidence going into this clash at Delhi. Sourave Ganguly
who is playing his penultimate test match was in top form as he produced a marvellous
swan song in his last test at Mohali. The elegant left hander who has never
quite lived up to his talented in the test format produced a master class that
helped India put up a massive four hundred plus score in the first innings.
That coupled with a fast century by Gambhir in the second innings and other
substantial contributions by the likes of Tendulkar and Sehwag ensured that
the Australians had no way back at Mohali. However, India will have the problem
of plenty going into this clash as skipper Anil Kumble is expected to
slot back into the side in the place of Amit Mishra. The rookie leg spinner
was outstanding in Australia's first innings taking a fiver and that is probably
the only bone of contention in what has been a breathtaking fortnight for the
Indian national cricket team.
Australia on the other hand, are a pale shadow of the world conquering side
of the late 90's and much of this decade as they were decimated by a fabulous
performance by India. The Aussies were out of sorts and despite some fighting
performances by the likes of Hussey and Michael Clarke, they fell short
in the face of an all round performance by the Indians. The defeat has indeed
sent shockwaves through out the cricket world and Australia will do good to
atleast pick up a draw to survive through to the last match. The absence of
Symonds and Warne has created a huge dent in the side and it remains to be seen
if Pointing and his troops can do justice to their tag as the premium test team
in the World when they face up to the Indian music over the next five days in
New Delhi.
