India come into this clash on the back of a successful ODI
campaign in Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue did good to bounce back from a
series of defeats in the Asia Cup and the test series and they will be confident
of wrestling away the Border Gavaskar Trophy from the hands of Australia. A
long pronged discussion saw the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid,
VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble retained for this series in spite of
the them being in their late 30's. India have done good against Australia in
recent times having won five test matches since the turn of the millennium while
losing eight. The Men in Blue have the best record against the Aussies and will
be itching to make up for losing the test series last time around at home to
the Baggie Green. The likes of Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh are in peak
form and it goes without saying that they will be critical to India's success
this time around. Victory here will put India on a strong platform in the upcoming
matches and given their track record at home, they will be reasonably confident
of atleats securing a draw against their mighty Australian counter-parts.
On the other hand, Australia will be shaken after a tough draw
against the Board XI at Hyderabad a couple of days before this clash.
A top draw spin performance by leg spinner Piyush Chawla coupled with
the batting poweress of Yuvraj Singh almost condemned Australia to defeat and
they look far less convincing as compared to the previous times. The absence
of a top draw spinner is beginning to hurt Australia and the retirement of Shane
Warne, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist has left them sore and barren.
However, Australia showed bags of reserve talent during their last trip against
the Windies and they certainly have the legs to match up to any top side in
World cricket at the moment. Brett Lee who has been the premium fast bowler
in international cricket over the past year will be expected to play a major
role while Stuart Clarke and Mitchell Johnson will be hoping to give Lee the
support as spinner-less Australia face up to a new challenge on the Indian subcontinent
when they make the trip to Bangalore to face Indian national cricket team this
coming Thursday 9th October 2008.
