India will aim to take a head start when they come up against
Bangladesh in the opening fixture of the Super four division in the Asia
Cup. The first round of matches saw the likes of Hong Kong and UAE
wave an expected goodbye and with the mainstays of Asian cricket still alive,
the stakes will be high when India come up against Bangladesh at Karachi on
the 28th of June 2008.

India come into this clash on a crest of confidence
having scored a mammoth 674 runs in their previous two clashes. Their previous
outing against Pakistan gave ample evidence on the strength and depth
of the Indian batting line up as they murdered a hapless Pakistani bowling attack
en route to a six wicket victory. Chasing a large score of 300, India rarely
looked in any sort of trouble or discomfort and a brilliant second wicket stand
of 190 between Suresh Raina and an inform Virender Sehwag saw to it that
India would go into the Super four series as Group leaders. India however will
be worried about their bowling attack which has let in the excess of 300 runs
in their previous two outings against Pakistan. The absence of three front line
bowlers in Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan is sorely felt by team
India and the likes of Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla will be hoping
to make a stronger impact than what they have done so far in the series. A victory
for India will hold them in good stead going into the crunch ties with Pakistan
and Sri Lanka and expect the likes of Yuvraj and Yusuf Pathan to get a good
run in against mimmows Bangladesh.
Bangladesh broke their recent run of defeats with a fine performance
against UAE. Batting first, Bangladesh piled up a score of 300 which they defended
with ease against a much weakened UAE bowling attack to register a 95 run victory.
However, the impetus was soon lost when they crashed down to earth following
a shattering 131 run loss to Sri Lanka two days later. While the batting
end of the team has shown signs of combat and improvement, it is the bowling
which continues to disappoint. With due respect to Mortaza and Abdur Razzak,
Bangladesh bowling still looks pedestrian in comparison to the other remaining
sides in the tournament and this is one area where Captain Mohammad Ashraful
will be looking to improve. Bangladesh have registered shock victories over
their Asian rivals in crucial matches earlier, with the win over India in the
World Cup coming to prominence and they will be hoping to do much of the same
this time around against Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his troops in Karachi.
