After a hard fought Asia Cup series in Pakistan, India
and Sri Lanka get ready to lock horns in a three match test series that
is sure to feed the aspirations and hunger of millions of cricket crazy fanatics
across the Indian subcontinent. India have been a much improved side over the
past few years but the recent loss of two consecutive finals will mean that

India will be bitterly disappointed after losing out in the Asia Cup final
in dramatic fashion. India looked to be well and nighly on their way to securing
their 5th Asia Cup final until they tumbled down to an amazing spell of spin
bowling from new comer Ajantha Mendis. However, although the one day
setup is comprised of young attacking superstars, the test team shall see the
likes of VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid come back into action
and it will be interesting to see how they cope up with the spin warhead of
Muttaih Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis. The bowling front will be much boosted
by the return of skipper Anil Kumble. The 37-year-old veteran has always had
a say in the turning pitches of Sri Lanka and he will play a vital role when
he comes up against a Sri Lankan line up sans Sanath Jayasurya. Other
notable inclusions include a maiden test call for young left armer Praveen Ojha.
Ojha has been in the headlines for his steady performances both in the Indian
premier League and the recently concluded Asia Cup and he will be hoping to
fill in the void left by the suspension of Harbhajan Singh. India last won a
test series against Sri Lanka way back in 1993 and with a side as strong as
any in the past, India will be hoping for a similar performance this time around.
Sri Lanka on the other hand , are high on confidence after overcoming recent
setbacks to be crowned the One day internationals kings of Asia. The Lankan
lions have been roaring on all counts in recent matches and although the retirement
of Sanath Jayasurya will have put a damper on their spirits, the likes of Kumara
Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena are more than capable of putting up huge scores.
Sri Lanka have been on a losing streak before the Asia Cup since their 2007
World Cup exploits and the recent downward spiral in their test performances
will have to be arrested if they are to make an entry in the elite of Test cricket
once again. This series will prove to be a huge stepping-stone for upcoming
superstar Ajantha Mendis. The young 23 year old spinner cast a web over the
famed Indian batting line up in the biggest game of his career last time around
and will have to prove in turning tracks of the Emerald nation that his previous
successes were not a flash in the pan. With, Muttaih Muralitharan back to form
and looking to build on his huge tally on 700 plus wicket, you can be rest assured
that India will have their work cut out when they come up against the Sri Lankans
in the three match India Sri Lanka test series starting this coming Wednesday
23rd July 2008 .
