 Pakistan face up against a depleted Zimbabwe in the first of the rearranged
five matches Pakistan Zimbabwe one day series to be held at Karachi
this coming Monday. This match was initially scheduled to be played in Hyderabad
but the PCB later moved to Karachi keeping the recent political trouble in Hyderabad
in mind. Both these sides come into this series on the back of series losses
to India and West Indies respectively and will be hoping for a much better performance
this time around.
Pakistan cricket will be gunning for pride after being battered by India
and South Africa in their last two one day and test series and will be
desperate to make a statement of intent with a crushing victory this Monday
over Zimbabwe. Pakistan have struggled all season through injuries and the trend
continues as pace men Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif
are all ruled out of this clash with various injuries. Shahid Afridi has also
been rested for this clash as Pakistan look to nourish new blood in their ranks.
A new look Pakistan squad has been drafted out for this clash and uncapped youngsters
Khurram Manzoo and Anwar Ali are expected to be making their debuts. Pakistan
lost their last home series 3-2 to South Africa and will be desperate to avoid
any upsets this time.
Zimbabwe have won just two of their thirty five one day internationals against
Pakistan and it would take a brave man to bet against that trend this Monday.
Zimbabwe cricket is still reeling after the departure of most of their squad
to greener pastures elsewhere and a real lack of quality and depth is evident
in the current Zimbabwe line up. While a victory over Pakistan here looks a
long shot Zimbabwe will be hoping to give a good account of themselves and build
on their one day victory over West Indies, their first in over five years
as they make their first tour to Pakistan in over eight years.
