India have won all their matches so far and having their batting to thank for
their success so far in the tournament. India have batted brilliantly with the
young fold of Suresh Raina, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam
Gambhir in brilliant form. Raina in particular has been impressive all throughout
and his performance against Pakistan was instrumental in setting up India's
confidence for the rest of the tournament. India have in truth, come up by leaps
and bounds in recent months and this clash will be a testimony of their new
found mental resolve. New Coach Gay Kirsten hasn't really had a strong run in
with the National team before the start of the Asia Cup and he will be anxious
to win a major trophy in his first year as coach of the Indian cricket team.
India however will be missing the services of fast bowlers Sreesanth and Zaheer
Khan for this clash. The form of young speedster Ishant Sharma has remained
bit of a concern for the Indian team and Dhoni will be hoping that the likes
of Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar can add a much needed shine to a bowling
line up which looks woefully short of options at the moment. Victory here will
see the Indians set up a reply with Sri Lanka in the finals of the Asia Cup
and expect the likes of Sehwag and Yuvraj to launch a full scale attack on the
Sri Lankan pace attack this time around in Karachi this coming Thursday.
Sri Lanka have been by far the most impressive side of the tournament so far
scoring runs a plenty throughout. The fears of an unsettled middle order have
come out unfounded as the fine form of openers Sanath Jayasurya and Kumara
Sangakarra has meant that the middle order can now afford to take their
time and build up the innings. Jayasurya looked in murderous form last time
around against Bangladesh in Sri Lanka's last outing. Sri Lanka were on the
offense from the very first ball and Jayasurya celebrated his 39th birthday
with a breath-taking innings of 130 from barely 88 balls. On the other hand,
Kumara Sangakarra has been all poise and class and he is in contention for securing
the man of the tournament award. The elegant left hander has scored two brilliant
centuries on the trot and his form added with his every alert wicket keeping
is essential to Sri Lanka's cause. The bowling department will be boosted by
the return to form of Muttiah Muralitharan. The off spinner looked in
great touch against Bangladesh picking up 5-31 and although Sri Lanka have qualified
for the finals , the Off Spinner will be hoping to increase his tally with a
strong performance against India this coming Thursday 3rd July 2008 in Karachi,
Pakistan.
