Pakistan come into this clash on the back of a disappointing 64 run defeat
to Sri Lanka. Electing to field first, Pakistan were soon taken to the
cleaners by some excellent batting from Kumara Sangakarra. The Sri Lankan
maestro looked in fine fettle and his century helped he Lankans move up to 284,a
total which was always going to prove challenging even for an inform Pakistan
batting line up. Despite strong middle order partnerships from Younis Khan and
Sohaib Malik, Pakistan fell short and that result will put them under a lot
of pressure coming into this match. While Pakistan's batting has been in fine
form the lack of big hitters in the side continues to hurt them dearly. Shahid
Afridi has been on poor form for the most part of a year and Pakistan sorely
miss his huge hits. On the bowling department, the absence of Umar Gul, Sohaib
Akthar and Mohammad Asif has meant that captain Sohaib Malik is seriously
short of options in the bowling department. Left armer Sohail Tanvir can lead
the line as proved by his five wicket haul last time around against Sri Lanka,
but the lack of other front line bowlers to give him company will hurt the Pakistan
national cricket side badly.
India on the other hand, have won all their three matches so far in the series
and are on their way to setting up a final date with rivals Sri Lanka. In their
way however, is a resolute Pakistan side and India will be confident of overcoming
Pakistan having won nine of their past thirteen matches against them Their record
in Pakistan in recent times is even more impressive, winning eight of their
past eleven matches. India come into this clash on the back of an impressive
win against Bangladesh. The top order has settled down properly and there is
a nice settled look about the batting line up. The likes of Suresh Raina
and Gautam Gambhir have finally started to fulfill their long term promise
and this will give skipper Dhoni a lot more options to bank upon. The bowling
department is pretty strong too although striker spearhead Ishant Sharma is
going through a rather indifferent phase. The Delhi paceman has dropped down
in pace and confidence in recent times and he will be hoping to strike back
into rhythm when he comes up against Pakistan this coming Wednesday July 2nd
2008 at Karachi.
