Sri Lanka will be hoping to redeem themselves after a disappointing
series down under with a test series victory over West Indies in the
Caribbean over the upcoming month, the firs of which starts this Saturday 22nd
March 2008 in Guyana.
Sri Lanka come into this series on the back of some
rather dire performances in Australia where they ailed to make any sort of mark
in the one day series. Only Kumara Sangakarra emerged out of the series
with some creditability while the rest of the batting collapsed in ruins down
under. However, Sri Lanka have been better in the test format over the past
year winning their previous test series 1-0 against England with Muralitharan
weaving rings around the English batting line up enroute to becoming the leading
wicket taker in International cricket.
Sri lanka have opted for a young inexperienced side for this series and will
be without mainstay openers Sanath Jayasurya and Marvan Attapatu both of whom
retired during the recently concluded test series against England. The bulk
of the batting responsibility will have to be handled by the duo of Kumara Sangakarra
and Mahela Jayawardena, the only two players to have played for over fifty tests
in the Sri Lankan batting line up. As expected Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda
Vaas lead the bowling attack, but Lasith Malinga, Farveez Maharoof and Dilhara
Fernando won't be around owing to injuries. Sri Lanka however have included
Ishara Amerasinghe, Thilan Thushara, Nuwan Kulasekara, and Chanaka Walegedara
leaving Jayawardena with a wealth of options to choose from in the first test
at Guyana.
The West Indies cricket team continues to disappoint cricket fans all over
the world despite having immense potential in their ranks. The recently concluded
test series in South Africa will go down as a disappointment for the Windies
when they spurned away a 1-0 lead to end up losing 2-1. However, in Marlon Samuels,
Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle they have a batting line up capable
of troubling the best attack on their day. The bowling front will be handled
by the upcoming pace duo of Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards and despite their
frequent injury breakdowns, the above mentioned pace duo should prove a fitting
response to the likes of Sangakarra and Jayawardena in the Sri Lankan batting
line up. West Indies haven't won a series at home for over four years now and
will be hoping to finally break that barren run with a strong result against
Sri Lanka in the first test in Guyana starting from the 22nd March 2008.
