India suffered a day of toil and hard work as an under strength
Indian attack found it tough to dislodge two batsmen in the peak of their form
in the fourth day of the fourth India Australia test match in
Adelaide. A fine 210 run partnership between Pointing and Clarke has almost
entirely ensured that Australia will end this series as the holders of the Border
Gavaskar trophy
Australia resumed day four at 280/3 and the score board kept
on ticking despite lung bursting spells from young rookie Ishant Sharma.
Sharma kept Pointing all at sea in the morning and it was only when the spinners
came on that the Australians broke the shackles. Ricky pointing and Clarke battled
efficiently, though not entirely pleasing to the eye and an Indian pace attack
sans the injured Rp Singh started to wilt on a hot sunny afternoon at an Adelaide
pitch which offered no assistance to the faster bowlers whatsoever. Things got
even worse for India when Anil Kumble was unable to bowl due to a sore
shoulder and India had to operate with three mainstream bowlers. Michael Clarke
got a reprieve on 84 when he was dropped by Dravid at first slip before Ishant
Sharma dismissed him courtesy a brilliant diving catch by veteran VVS Laxman.
Ishant Sharma was in full flow then and soon accounted for Andrew Symonds with
a ripper of a delivery that caught the fearsome Australian all rounder in no
mans land.
The fall of Symonds saw the arrival of one of the greatest
legends of the game in Adam Gilcrhist. Gilcrhist was playing his last ever test
match and the crowd waited in anxiety for the Australian for one last effort
to propel his side ahead. However, this was not to be as nicked off of Pathan
for just nineteen. The departure of Gilcrhist from the twenty two yards as a
batsman for possibly the last time was an occasion good enough for applause
and appreciation for this efforts and the whole Indian team joined up to give
one of the legends of the game a fitting farewell. Australia's innings soon
collapsed for 563 when they looked destined for much more and after India threw
away fears of a collapse after the fall of Irfan Pathan for a duck with
some sensible batting by Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid, a draw
looked the most probable result in the fourth test match at Adelaide.
