The BCCI today asserted its new Indian Premier League (IPL) will be a commercial
success with over 30 corporates and individuals already approaching it for sponsorship,
even as Sony Entertainment Television claimed it was confident of bagging telecast
rights for these matches.
"While it is too premature to say what kind of revenues we are looking
at from IPL, we already have over 30 corporates and individuals contacting us
expressing their interest to be a part of the league," BCCI Vice-President
Lalit Modi told reporters here.
He, however, declined to comment on the details, saying the Board has just
about taking the product to the market.
The Board had modeled the league with such a financial structure
that different franchisees, who will run the eight teams, will have trading
opportunities and can even list the teams on the bourses, Modi said.
The franchisees will have to pay BCCI a fee for being a part
of the IPL but at the same time they will get access to share revenues with
BCCI, he added.
Modi said commercial rights for IPL, including broadcast and
in-stadia, would be tendered out in due course of time.
Already the fight for broadcast rights has started, with SET India Chief
Executive Officer Kunal Dasgupta claiming the firm was "confident
of bagging the telecast rights".
