The Indian Premier league Governing Council has said that Sourav Ganguly will not be a part of the Indian Premier League. The announcement was made after the governing council debated hard about the inclusion of the former Kolkata Knight Riders captain but it was found that there were many teams who had opposed the move.
Ganguly had not been selected from the auction that was held in January 2011.
The rules that the IPL have stipulate that any player who is a part of the auction
but does not get selected through it cannot be selected from outside the auctions.
Given that Ganguly was not bid for in the auction, the rules wouldn't have allowed
him to get a place in the IPL.
However, there was at least one team which showed interest in getting in Ganguly
from outside the auction and they had written a letter to the IPL showing their
interesting. The council, on their part, decided to hold a meeting, taking opinions
from the rest of the sides on the matter. However, it was said that there were
three other teams in the meeting who objected to the last minute change of rules
and hence the decision to select Ganguly had to be canned.
The only way now that Ganguly can get back playing the IPL is if a team decides
to get him as a replacement for an injured player in the side.
In other news from the IPL Governing Council meeting, the IPL has also decided
to ban Manish Pandey for four matches in the IPL. He will miss the first
four games of the fourth edition of the IPL. This decision was taken after the
Royal Challengers Bangalore complained to the IPL council that Pandey
had asked for more money to sign up with them.
The rules stipulate that the Indian cricketers who have not played any international
cricket can be paid a maximum of Rs.50 lakh only. However, in case of players
like Pandey, who had shown immense talent but have failed to get an Indian cap
so far, it means that they will be grossly underpaid as compared to some of
their other peers like Saurabh Tiwary, who will be paid Rs.5 crore.
It also announced that Pandey will be signing with the Sahara Pune Warriors.
Pune will play five of its home games at the DY Patil while the rest of the
games will be played at the new stadium in Pune.
