Sourav Ganguly has refused to be associated with the Kolkata Knight Riders as the mentor of the side and said that he will no longer be a part of the Ranji trophy unless he was selected for the IPL.Sourav Ganguly had earlier not been picked by any of the IPL sides during the auction and later three teams shot down the idea that he could be selected from outside the auction.
Ganguly said that he was offered the role of the mentor of the side by the
co-owner, Shah rukh Khan but he had refused to accept it because he thought
the Knight Riders did not need a mentor. Ganguly said that with guys like Dav
Whatmore, who is the coach of the side, and Wasim Akram, the bowling
consultant of the side around in the side, the team did not need any mentors.
Ganguly also claimed that the reason for the Knight Riders' lack of performance
was the manner in which they lost confidence after every defeat. He gave the
example of the team and the owners panicking after each loss and that contributed
to the issues that the team faced.
Ganguly wasn't picked by Kolkata for this season in the tournament during the
auction. None of the other teams selected him either but post the auction, Kochi
seemed to have expressed their interest in the player. However, the rest of
the teams refused to allow the IPL to change the rules which have explicitly
said that the players who have been a part of the auction cannot be selected
from outside the auction.
Ganguly said that the reason for his ouster from the IPL could have been anything
but cricket. He said that when the likes of Adam Gilchrist, Rahul
Dravid and VVS Laxman were still a part of the IPL, he had no reason to
believe why he wasn't selected.
He also said that he had nothing to do with politics and that had that been
the case, he would have never survived for the 13 years that he did in international
cricket.
Ganguly also said that he will look to see what he needs to do in the future
but claimed that he wished to join as the administrator of the Cricket Association
of Bengal. Ganguly also said that he would love to coach the Indian team sometime
in the future. Ganguly retired from international cricket in 2008.
