The International Cricket Council has asked the Pakistan team management
to avoid holding press conferences in the Urdu language as it consumes a lot of
time.A source in the Pakistan team based in Kingston disclosed that media
manager Pervez Mir and manager Talat Ali had been told to hold their
news conferences in English.
"He (ICC media manager Brian Murgatroyd) has told them
that the ICC can't allow the Pakistani players to address conferences
in Urdu as the process of their media manager then translating for the player
and the press takes a long time and the ICC has fixed times for all media
meets," one source said.
The source said some of the international presspersons might
have complained to the ICC about the long time needed to cover a media conference
of the Pakistan team as it involved the language problem.
Pakistan captain Inzamam ul Haq himself was not happy
when last week Mir decided all of a sudden that the players would address the
news conferences in Urdu and he would translate the substance in English for
the media people.
Inzamam felt the timing of the decision was wrong and didn't reflect well on
the players themselves.
The Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Dr Naseem Ashraf
who is in the West Indies had, however, backed the change saying it was a good opportunity to promote Urdu language internationally.
