India shot themselves into the driver's seat in the ongoing
India Australia series with some amazing late order batting performance
to deny the Aussies any quick breakthrough and post up a mammoth 526. Anil Kumble
continued his fine form with the bat, the skipper having scored a century and
two half centuries in his last five test matches as he made a battling 87 to
probably avert any chance of India losing this clash at the Adelaide oval this
Friday.
Indian resumed day two on 305/5 and started things brightly
with Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni at their fluent
best. However Dhoni fell on the back of a very poor shot against Brett Lee who
was generating substantial pace and soon Tendulkar perished after a brilliant
154 in which he had denied the Australians for so long. However the Australians
were unable to achieve any further success in the post lunch session as the
Indian tail wagged to take the score way beyond five hundred with two huge partnerships
down the end. The Australians were guilty of some very ordinary fielding and
this might come back to haunt them later as the match
Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh piled up the agony on the Australian
bowlers with a brilliant eight wicket partnership in excess of hundred. Kumble
was the one keeping watch while Harbhajan went all hammer and tongs on a weakened
Australian bowling line up as the partnership took India past the 450 mark.
Kumble was given a chance in between when Matthew Hayden dropped a relatively
easy catch when the leg spinner was just on seven, It did prove detrimental
to the Australian's cause as Kumble played some lovely on drives before launching
into Andrew Symonds to complete his half century. On the other hand, Harbhajan
was letting no respite for the Aussie quicks as they completed their century
stand. Harbhajan finally departed for 63, his second fifty in a fine batting
series giving Adam Gilcrhist his 414 test catch, a new world record surpassing
Mark Boucher's 413. However, there was more ins tore for the Australian bowling
line up as Ishant Sharma and Anil Kumble hung of for a fifty run partnership
that took India firmly beyond the 500 mark and when Kumble finally departed
thirteen short of his second century, he had guided India to a mammoth 526 .
The Australian reply was smooth and fluent as Matthew Hayden carried on from
where he left in Sydney as the Australians moved up to 60 without loss at the
end of day two. However, Team Australia still have a lot more to accomplish
of they are to prevent an Indian victory in the final test match at Adelaide.
