The Indian coach Duncan Fletcher has said that the Indian side has a great
depth and had the potential to be the number one side in the world in both formats
of the game for at least five years.
Speaking to the media, he also revealed that if there is a player who wanted some
advice or anything technical to look into, he is most ready to help out the individual.
However, he prefers the one on one, conversations than having a full-fledged meeting
with the entire team together.
He also added that was what came naturally to him and would love to continue doing
the same in the time to come. He also added that the reason why he would prefer
having a one-on-one conversation with the players is because people are much more
comfortable speaking like that and that is why the habit.
He also said that he wouldn't want to get things out in the media and the discussions
will remain a secret between the coach and the player as a part of confidentiality.
Fletcher added that he would prefer that he has a look at the players first before
commenting to them of their technical issues. He said that it was a matter of
gaining the trust of the individuals before making one's points.
Fletcher, who has had issues with Geoff Boycott in the past, said that
he would not like to comment on anything that Boycott had said. Earlier, the
former English captain had said that even his mother could coach the Indian
team.
Speaking of the tour itself, it was a good initiation he said, in which he would
try to gain the respect of the players even as they do the same from the coach.
It remains to be seen whether that helps the side in any way, but for now, Fletcher
seems to have had a good start to the series having won the T20I and leading the
ODI series 3-0. It will be more interesting to see how Fletcher coaches the Indian
side when they play England later this year.
Fletcher is a former coach of the English side and knows a few of their players
inside out - having been with them till 2007 before being pushed out.
Fletcher said that the team India had the right mix to become the best
in the world.
