The inaugural Champions League Twenty20 starting from October 8 will miss
more than one players who are nursing injuries picked up by them during or before
the currently happening Champions Trophy that ends on October 5.
The list starts from the South African skipper, Graeme Smith who has
withdrawn his name from the twenty20 tournament because of a leg injury he picked
up during the Champions Trophy and failed to pass a fitness test. Smith plays
for Nashua Cape Cobras in the tournament and will possibly want to get
fit before the England's tour of South Africa next month.
Dr Mohammed Moosajee, South African team manager has confirmed the development
and said that the Proteas' management together with medical committee of Cricket
South Africa headed by Dr Shuaib Manjra, have taken the decision to withdraw
his name from the upcoming Champions League in India that ends on October 23.
It was also cleared by the South African physiotherapist, Brandon Jackson earlier
that it was very important for the 28-year-old captain to stay away from playing
for another four to six weeks. Meanwhile, the decision has been taken to replace
Smith with Andrew Puttick as the skipper of the Cape Cobras.
Another top player of the South African team, AB de Villiers who plays for
the Delhi Daredevils in the Champions League, has also withdrawn his
name form the tournament due to a lower back pain. De Villiers, who was the
top run getter for his team in IPL-II, said that he was disappointed to miss
the Champions League but wished all the best to his team, Delhi Daredevils.
Manjra, Chairman of CSA's medical committee said in a statement that AB de
Villiers had developed left lumbar pain four weeks ago during the preparation
for the Champions Trophy. The statement also said that the management
has therefore decided to withdraw AB from all cricketing activities for the
next four to six weeks so that he can be allowed proper management of condition
and also prevent any further injury.
