According to a report on a popular cricket website, many of the IPL franchises
have expressed their thoughts about what they want from the IPL before the forthcoming
auctions.
After Lalit Modi was suspended as the IPL chairman, two more franchises
have been added to the already existing eight, and to add to that, there have
been many problems associated with the same. For one, there is the complex problem
associated with player retention, wherein the franchises have apparently said
that they do not want the franchises to have any player from the past - have
a fresh auction from scratch. So, what they effectively mean is that all the
players will go back to the auction pool.
However, there is another school of thought that says that the teams should
be able to retain some players - Sachin Tendulkar spoke about retaining
eight players!
The other option that has been given is to do with the provision of a couple
of cards, where every team has the right to refusal for a couple of their players.
That is, if the auction sees Sachin Tendulkar bid for a sum of 2 million dollars,
then Mumbai Indians could use this card to buy him at that price.
The reason behind doing this is that it will ensure transparency in the entire
system.
Also, there have been talks of reducing the games in the tournament from a
potential 94 for the next season to around 65. But the franchises seem to be
unanimous about this decision not happening given that it would mean that the
revenues for them would be lesser than what they had planned for.
One of the franchises said, "The number one reason for adding teams and
having more matches was having more revenue. If the number of matches is reduced,
it doesn't work for me,"
There are also issues about salary caps with the teams allowed to spend $7
million each on players at the auction. Unfortunately, there is no cap for the
players bought from outside the auction an that could mean that the franchises
with a lot of money could end up having an advantage.
The franchises are also looking at having a greater say in how the IPL is run,
and having a franchise representative in the governing council. This member
would assist in giving out the information to the franchises in a timely manner.
The meeting to decide this will happen on Thursday.
