The BCCI chief, Shashank Manohar has warned the IPL franchises which sent
a letter expressing dissatisfaction on the sacking of IMG from being the sports
management company handling the IPL. Manohar has said that the franchise had no
right to meddle with the internal affairs of the IPL and that they will need to
mind their own business.
However, the BCCI has re-jigged the deal with IMG and retained the sports management
company after all. Earlier there had been problems with the amount that was
being spent on IMG to manage the Indian Premier League, which many of
the members of the cricket board felt was much more than what they thought IMG
deserved. In the first season, almost Rs.45 crores were spent by the BCCI on
IMG, and in the second season of the tournament in South Africa, there were
more than Rs.30 crores that was billed. It has not been decided that the IPL
will pay the company Rs.33 crore for the previous season, and from the next
season onwards, they will pay Rs.27 crores to IMG for the next eight seasons.
What has, however, miffed the BCCI is the fact that there was an obvious cartelisation
of the franchisees in the issue and apart from the Chennai Super Kings, all
the others had written a letter of discontent to the IPL. The only franchisee
which hadn't sent the letter was N.Srinivasan's Chennai Super Kings which had
in turn been one of the board members responsible for the raking up the over-payment
issue. There have been enough rumors to suggest that N.Srinivasan and Lalit Modi have not been seeing eye to eye over the IPL thing, as the Srinivasan faction
is miffed at the way Modi has become the face of the tournament.
There were other decisions taken as well. The Jaipur ODI between India and
Australia has been shifted to Baroda after there has been a struggle for power
between Sanjay Dixit and Lalit Modi. It is not known who the president
of the Rajasthan Cricket Association is.
The board also made an announcement that the players will need to shell out
15% of their IPL earnings as tax for the tournament in South Africa. However,
the BCCI themselves will not pay any tax. The other announcements were to do
with the retaining of Sourav Ganguly in the technical committee and having
K.Srikkanth continue as the chairman of selectors for the Indian national side.
