Ricky Ponting, the current Australian skipper has said that if his side
loses to the English cricket team in the forthcoming Ashes, he could well have
played his last game as a captain of the Australian cricket team. Ponting has
already become the first captain in many decades to lose the Ashes twice over
to England, and if loses again, he will become the only one to lose it
thrice.
Ponting has been one of the best batsmen in the world and the best that Australia
has prodiced in recent times. But that does not stop him from saying that he
would probably look at a change in his profession if the Aussies lost the Ashes
again. He added, "It's as simple as that. I've got the biggest eight months
of my career coming up."
Australia will play the two Asian sies, Pakistan and India in a couple of Tests
each, before the English side comes over to Australia for the five match Ashes.
The series will begin in Brisbane in November, and will see the Aussies battle
it out to regain what they had lost in 2009 to England.
Ponting said that it never got bigger than having an Ashes and the World Cup one after the other in a span of three months, and "I will be geared
at getting the most out of myself and, most importantly, the group,"
However, despite the importance of the series, Ricky Ponting has said
that he will be not be weighed down by the expectations and the importance of
the series. He said that he was under no kind of pressure and would only think
of how to have a "significant impact on the Ashes series as a batsman and
as a leader."
He added, "That's all I can control. I know what it takes to be a good
player in a big series and I know what it will take for the rest of the guys."
He also took a dig at the English side and said that despite winning the ODI
series, the English side were not as good as the Aussies. He also said that
the team was currently ranked two in the Test matches and number one in ODIs
and that meant that the side was much better than England.
He said, "Until England get their heads above us in all of the tables
then superiority will be with us"
