Gautam Gambhir has expressed that Gary Kirsten should continue as Indian
team's coach after the World Cup in February next year. Kirsten's contract expires
after the World Cup assignment and Gambhir has called for the BCCI to renew
it.
Gambhir was full of praise for Kirsten; he feels Kirsten is the best coach
in the history of Indian cricket. Gautam Gambhir says he has stressed
this point on more than one occasion. Gambhir also said that Kirsten doesn't
need explanations in words, his outstanding record as coach and administrator
speak for itself. Due to these facts, Gambhir feels Kirsten should be retained.
He was talking to media at a promotional event in India.
Gambhir has joined several other players of opinion that Kirsten's contract
would be renewed after his great stint as a coach. Cricket South Africa have
expressed desires to have the former South African opener as their coach once
his terms with BCCI end.
The Indian opener favored Kirsten's idea of sending some players to South
Africa early so they get accustomed to the conditions, climate and wickets there.
Gambhir said that India haven't played a lot of cricket in South Africa
lately, so the idea of sending players early is certainy a valid one and can
work significantly in India's favor.
Speaking about his absence from the game, Gambhir said no one can maintain top
notch form throughout his career; highs and lows come as a part of life. He
said it's always a difficult thing coming from injury to play top class cricket,
only spending some time in the middle can make up for the lost time and there
is just no substitute to match practice.
Gambhir, who plays for Delhi Daredevils, warned India of complacency and maintained
that he knows that the series against New Zealand won't be an easy as
some might think. He said that despite their whitewash by Bangladesh the Black
Caps have many proven match winning players who can click anytime. Gambhir said
that New Zealand series cannot be treated lightly, as India can suffer if they
do that.
When asked some questions about non cricket things cricketers do, Gambhir
on a lighter note said that walking on the ramp is not quite hard as opening
the batting for India. He also said that a cricketer's real pride and
task is to perform for his team on the field not glamour and showbiz.
