Mahendra Singh Dhoni is set for a challenge of leading a virtually inexperienced
team in the World Twenty20 Championships as India has played just one international
match in the shortest version of the game.
Dhoni on his debut as a captain, however, can draw inspiration from the one-off
match in which India had defeated South Africa by six wickets at the Wanderers
in December 2006.
India, placed alongside Pakistan and Scotland in Group
D, will play its first match against the Scots on Thursday.
So far, there have been only 19 twenty20 international matches
played since the format was officially launched in 2005.
Contrary to India, England are the only team to have
played most number of twenty20 international matches. In the six matches they
have played so far, England have won two and lost four.
Australia, which has played five matches so far, have the distinction
of scoring highest total of 221 as well as dubious distinction of lowest mark
of 79 both against England.
