Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan today joined the chorus against
appointing a foreign coach for the national team, saying it was "unfair"
when many talented coaches were present in the country itself.
Moin said the team did not need a "high profile" coach being searched
by the Board but a systematic "planner" who could make things easier
for the players.
"The team needs a coach. But not a high profile one like
the Board has been saying in recent days. We need more off a planner someone
who can make life easier for the players. We certainly don't need a foreign
coach," Moin said just couple of days before Bob Woolmer's successor is
named on Monday.
"We have tried experimenting with foreigners in the past and I think the
Board should appoint one of our own former players. There are many who if given
the confidence are capable of delivering the goods," he added.
The former wicketkeeper-batsman, who remains one of the country's most endearing
cricketers because of his spunky characteristics, said he was upset at the way
the Board was treating its own players.
"We now have a full coaching structure in the country
and some very good coaches in the National Cricket Academy. Guys like
Mudassar Nazar, Aaqib Javed, Rashid Khan, Jalaluddin etc
are very good coaches.
"But unfortunately there is no ultimate reward for them. When the time
comes to pick a coach for the senior team you go for a foreigner which is unfair,"
he said.
Moin pointed out that being selected to play for the Pakistan
team was the ultimate achievement for any player and at this level he did not
need any coaching.
"What he needs is for someone to plan out the practice session and motivate
him," he said.
