The ongoing battle between off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and the Australian fans took another dirty turn when the off-spinner was abused and thrown eggs at just when he returned to his hotel after dinner. Reports suggest that a car traveling at great speed stopped near the pavement on which the Sri Lankan team was traveling and slurred abuses and threw an egg on the back of Muralitharan. Muralitharan has been a victim of abuse by arrogant Australian fans over the years and this will only add fuel to a raging fire. The Australian police have beefed up security for Muralitharan and the other target Indian off spinner Harbhajan Singh as both of them get ready to represent their sides in the upcoming tri-nations series against Australia.

Muttiah Muralitharan has never been a fan favourite in Australia and almost every single tour down under has resulted in some abuse or the other for the legendary off spinner. Muralitharan was no balled for an astounding seven times by disgraced umpire Darrel Hair back in 1995 and three years later, then skipper Arjuna Ranatunga had to go the extent of waging a vocal war against the umpires to defend Muralitharan. The present abuse shows the Australian cricketing public in bad light indeed and after all that has been said and written about captain Ricky Pointing trying to sober up his team, cricket Australia needs to do some sever soul searching if they are to match up with the best ever sides in international cricket.
