 Ashish Nehra has been afforded a retainer contract by the BCCI after he had made
a remarkable comeback to the Indian team in the last six months or so. Ashish Nehra had been out of the Indian side for almost four years between 2005 and
2009 before he made a comeback to the side and made it count. In the 16 games
that he has played in after making his comeback, he has captured 25 wickets at
an average of 26, which has been the best amongst all the Indian bowlers.
He has been afforded the Grade B contract. There are four types of retainer
contracts that the BCCI has, Group A, B, C and D. The players in the A contract
get paid Rs.60 lakh per annum, whereas those in B, C and D are given 40, 25
and 15 lakh rupees respectively. Those who have played a single ODI or a single
test match in the previous season are automatically given the Group D retainer
contract, apart from their other match fees.
The bigger set of news could have been the fact that Irfan Pathan missing
name from the contracts list altogether. Pathan had been given a Group B contract
last year. However, this year, he hasn't played too much, because of his loss
of form and then his injury issues. He hasn't even played the Ranji trophy,
before finally making it for the latest game for Baroda. However, the Board
later backtracked saying that Pathan had been left out by mistake and was afforded
the Grade C contract. This meant that he would be paid Rs.25 lakh instead of
Rs.40 lakh that he was paid last year.
Apart from Pathan, there have been other players who have been demoted. This
includes S Badrinath, who slipped to Group C from B last year, and Piyush Chawla, who moves down from Group D to Group C. There were four new entries
in India's latest retainer list - Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ajinkya
Rahane and Manoj Tiwary. Rather unsurprisingly, three of them represent the
Mumbai Ranji side, winners of the previous Ranji Trophy tournament.
Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid,
VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh are all part of
the Group A contract.
Group B consists of Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Munaf Patel, RP Singh,
Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra.
Group C has S Badrinath, Wasim Jaffer, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Pragyan
Ojha, Sreesanth, Dinesh Karthik, Amit Mishra.
Piyush Chawla, Ravindra Jadeja, Robin Uthappa, Parthiv Patel, Cheteshwar
Pujara, Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli, Ashok Dinda, Wriddhiman Saha, M Vijay, R
Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, Sudeep Tyagi, Dhawal Kulkarni, Abhishek Nayar, Ajinkya
Rahane, Manoj Tiwary are all a part of Group D.
