The
Pune Warriors India had had a good start to the IPL when they won two games
in a row but after losing so many in a row and ending on the ninth position in
the points table, there will be a few heads that may roll. It has been said that
the former Australian opener Geoff Marsh, who was the coach of the Pune
Warriors, may not continue to be a part of the setup from the next season. Apart
from that, there could be some others who will have unpleasant things coming their
way.
There were two other assistant coaches in the side who could be under pressure
as well. Dermot Reeve, former cricketer for England and a commentator
and a coach will get the boot it has been said it was ascertained that he hadn't
had too much of a role while Praveen Amre may be saved the sack given that there
aren't too many Indian coaches around.
The owner of the Pune Warriors team, Sahara will have its owner, Subrata Roy think through the processes and take a decision in the coming weeks.
According to someone close to the owners, the franchise may look to kick out the
non performers and that will mean that despite having a very good team, the Pune
Warriors' finishing ninth will lead to some of those in support staff to make
way.
Marsh has been a World Cup winning player as well as a World Cup winning coach,
apart from having coached the Aussies to an Ashes win, but the T20 format seems
to have been a totally different kettle of fish for the side. It has been rumoured
that he lacked the assertiveness that is needed from a coach and that is why the
side lost.
What could save Marsh from getting an axe is the fact that it was only the first
year in the tournament and he could deserve a second chance. However, the flip
to that is that the side may need to start off from something totally new in the
second year.
What helps Amre is that he is an Indian and as an assistant coach, one needs an
Indian to be a part of the setup. With not too many assistant coaches from India
around, this could be a chance for him to continue for the second year.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of Sourav Ganguly's presence in the
side.
