The Indian selectors have named the team to play in the Bangladesh tri-series
against the hosts and the third side, Sri Lanka. Sachin Tendulkar will
rest from the series after a gruelling three months or so, and his place in the
side will be taken up by Mumbaite, Rohit Sharma.
Rohit Sharma makes his way back into the side after having smashed a triple
century in the recent Ranji trophy game. He had been a part of the Indian side,
but was dropped after he failed to get the big scores needed by the side.
And there have been many other changes to the side as well, some surprising,
and some others on the expected lines. Ishant Sharma, almost expectedly has
been dropped after a poor run of form and a sagging confidence and morale. Again,
Praveen Kumar has been excluded as well, which is a surprise given that
he was barely a part of the series against Sri Lanka. In their place, the pair
of Ashok Dinda and S. Sreesanth make their entry back. Sudeep Tyagi continues
to remain in the side despite not having played a single game so far.
Ishant has conceded 130 runs in the 14 overs he bowled in the series with an
economy of almost ten runs per over, and despite having had the pace to trouble
the opposition, he looked out of place and confused. Surprisingly, Dinesh Karthik has been chosen in the squad as well, despite being a back-up 'keeper.
For no plausible rhyme or reason, the Indian selectors have dropped the left-arm
spinner Pragyan Ojha and got in Amit Mishra.
MS Dhoni also makes a return to the squad as the captain after having been
banned for two games by the match referee. However, what is more surprising
is that Virender Sehwag has been named the vice-captain of the side,
after he had once said that he will not assume that responsibility for the vice-captaincy.
However, with not too many contenders now in the picture, the selectors seem
to have convinced him into taking up the role.
The selectors also have chosen to allow Yuvraj Singh to tour Bangladesh
despite the uncertainty about his injury. They also announced the side for the
fifth ODI, in which the Indians will have Dhoni back, as they will have the
services of Ashok Dinda too for the game. However, Sreesanth will directly join
the side in Bangladesh.
