The
issue of captaincy and Virender Sehwag just does not seem to die down! Talking
to the media Sehwag said that he thought that his Delhi and India team mate, Gautam Gambhir was good enough to be the captain of the Indian side in the future.
Sehwag has said that Gambhir was the leading member of the side to be the next
captain, something that could be inferred from the fact that he had been made
the vice captain of the side after Yuvraj Singh had been ruled out of the
tournament with a broken finger.
According to Sehwag, Gambhir was not only a good batsman, but also a very intelligent
overall cricketer, and could take up the role of leading the side. He gave the
example of the Delhi side winning the Ranji trophy under the leadership of Gambhir
in the 2007-08 season.
M.S.Dhoni has been the Indian captain for more than two years now, and Virender Sehwag had been the deputy for some time. However, Sehwag's injury had meant
that Yuvraj Singh had been appointed the vice-captain for the series. This was
followed by the Yuvraj-injury episode and the ruling out of the player. Gambhir,
who was making a comeback to the side after his own injury then was named the
vice captain of the series.
Sehwag had only recently said that he did not want to become the vice captain
of the side because that role should belong to someone who could be nurtured
into the role of the captain for the future. He then went on to resign from
the captaincy of the Delhi Daredevils in order to allow himself time
to get back into the side as a batsman and focus on that aspect of the game.
When quizzed about that decision, he said it was to do with his inability to
lead the side into the finals of the IPL on two successive occasions.
He said, "I tried for two years and we didn't qualify for the finals so
I told the owners to try someone else's luck as mine was not working."
He also said that he was not fit enough for the international cricket as he
could not throw the ball from the boundary. But he added that he should be okay
by the time the India Australia series is around the corner.
