The President of the BCCI and one of the members of the IPL Governing Council
has said that he will not be a part of the three-man disciplinary committee that
will decide on the future of the suspended IPL chief, Lalit Modi. Earlier, he
was said to have been on the panel that was to decide whether or not Modi will
be allowed to continue in the Governing Council of the IPL.
The BCCI has also said that the replacement for the BCCI chief will be announced
after the special general meeting that the Board will hold on the 3rd of the
next month in Mumbai. In the same meeting on the 3rd of July, the members will
also discuss the replies to the three show-case notices sent by Lalit Modi.
The special general meeting had been called by the secretary of the Board,
N Srinivasan, at the behest of Shashank Manohar, to discuss the charges
on Modi and their particular replies. Earlier, Modi had been asking the two,
Srinivasan and Manohar to remove themselves from the disciplinary committee
that hears the case against him, because he had claimed that they had personal
grudges against him.
It is said that the new committee that will be formed will now hear the case,
and once that is done, pass a judgement that will act as a recommendation to
the general body of the BCCI. This general body will then vote on the recommendation
and if 75% of the votes are for it, then the recommendation will be passed.
Board vice-presidents Arun Jaitley and Chirayu Amin, who is also the
interim chairman of the IPL are also the part of this disciplinary committee
and will be a part of the decision-making process. All the members of the BCCI
now hold the copies of all the show cause notices, the answers sent back by
Modi and the letter by Manohar that excuses himself from the decision-making
process.
If there are enough votes to throw Modi out of the BCCI, then he will not be
allowed to hold any office position within the BCCI for a period of three years
at least. If after the three year period elapses and the same committee provides
a 3/4th vote, Modi could be reinstated back into the BCCI.
It remains to be seen how the BCCI will handle this case, and whether Lalit Modi will go to court against his expulsion.
