Pakistan pacers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif were today ruled out of the
World Cup in Caribbean due to injuries.
The team's media manager, Pervez Mir told reporters
that both the fast bowlers had not been able to recover from injuries despite
getting treatment in London.
"They are out of the World Cup and the selectors have
replaced them with allrounder Yasir Arafat and Mohammad Sami," he
said.
He said both the replacements would join the team in a week's
time as the Pakistan squad left for the West Indies today.
International Cricket Council chief executive Malcolm
Speed said cricket had been "greatly embarrassed" by the drama
while Australian batsman Matthew Hayden said it was "ludicrous"
Akhtar and Asif were included in the Pakistan 15-man squad in the first place.
