The Indian team for the ICC World T20 was chosen by the Indian selectors.
And there was many question marks surrounding the same, especially in the wake
of some performances and fitness issues.
Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra are the two players who have generated
much noise givent hat they are not yet fit to play for Delhi in the IPL. Gambhir
had been a part of the team in the first couple of games in the tournament,
but later went on to limp out of the third game. Ever since then, he hasn't
played anything and is a doubtful starter for the game against Kolkata as well.
Nehra's story has been even worse. He is yet to play in a single game in the
IPL and hence, has yet to even feature in the training sessions with the ball
in his hand. And yet, he has been chosen in the side, with the chairman of the
selectors, Srikkanth talking about everyone being absolutely fit for the tournament.
Of course, there are other worries like the injury to MS Dhoni and some of
the selection decisions taken by the selectors. For example, Piyush Chawla
has been preferred over the likes of Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra, both of whom
have been bowling much better than Chawla in the IPL. Even in the international
cricket leading up to the IPL, the two, Ojha and Mishra had been fighting for
the second spinner's slot and now have had their position taken over by a totally
different guy!
Then, there was the exclusion of Virat Kohli which has made no sense.
This means that the side will be missing a decent middle order in a format which
needs youngsters. This is also a surprise given that Kohli has played well at
the international level leading up to the IPL. So, this exclusion may send out
mixed signals to the youngster, making it difficult for him to come back into
the reckoning.
Then, there is a case of Manish Pandey. Pandey has been in the form
of his life, both at the first class level and the IPL and yet, he does not
find a place. Unfortunately for the fans around the country, the chairman of
selectors has said that he will not talk about individual players, which means
that the fans will be left without any explanation for the same!
