Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar was on Thursday presented a Lifetime Achievement
Award for his contribution to the game.
Bollywood star Mithun Chakrabarty handed over the award
to the 'Little Master' at a glittering function organised by the Calcutta
Sports Journalists' Club.
Gavaskar was presented a citation, a plaque and a trophy, besides
mementos and a caricature of him.
"It is always good to receive recognition from people who know the game
and travel all around the world to cover the game. To get an honour from them
is a humbling experience," he said.
Luminaries from the cultural and sports world were present
at the function, where nimble-footed striker Bhaichung Bhutia was given
a special award for being adjudged 'Best Footballer of the Decade'.
Celebrated Brazilian striker Jose Ramirez Barreto, who
has been enthralling sports buffs for years with his silken skills and goal
scoring ability, was feted for being the 'Best Foreign Player of the Decade'.
Special awards were also given to heptathlete Soma Biswas,
Bengal Ranji Trophy captain Deep Dasgupta, medium pacer Ranadeb Bose
as also Mithun Chakrabarty.
Soma was declared the most decorated contemporary athlete. Ranadeb has been
the highest wicket-taker in the domestic season while Deep has led Bengal to
two consecutive Ranji Trophy finals.
Mithun, who earlier founded the Bengal Football Academy, was
felicitated for promoting the cause of football in the state.
