Sachin Tendulkar added the nine runs that he needed to get to his double century and got to his sixth ever double century in Test match cricket. Sachin Tendulkar
scored his double century against Australia in the second Test match at Bangalore
on the fourth day of the game.
Tendulkar was on 191 when the play was called off for bad light on third day
of the second Test match. He needed nine runs to get to his landmark overnight
but he had opted to play slowly through the end of the play on the third day
before the umpires decided to call it quit.
Tendulkar got to his double century on the fourth morning by first hitting
a boundary and then placing the ball in front of himself off the bowling of
Mitchell Johnson and dashing off for the required run. He had got to
his hundred by hitting two sixes when he was on 93.
This was Tendulkar's 2nd 200 in this year, following the double ton that he
had made against Sri Lanka at Colombo in a match-saving effort. Tendulkar has
also scored four other double centuries. These include his first ever double
century against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 1999, followed by a double against
Zimbabwe at Nagpur. He followed it up with a double century against Australia
in 2004 and another 200 against the Bangladeshis at Dhaka in that same year.
Tendulkar is the second Indian to score six double centuries after Virender Sehwag, Apart from Tendulkar and Sehwag, Rahul Dravid has made five double
centuries as well. However, apart from the aforementioned there are four other
cricketers who have made 6 200s, there are two who have made 7 200s, one who
has scored 9 200s and then there is Sir Don Bradman who holds the record for
the most ever - 12.
The other batsmen to get to six doubles are Marvan Atapattu, Mahela
Jayawardene and Javed Miandad. Then there are the likes of Kumar Sangakkara
and Wally Hammond with seven, Brian Lara with nine double centuries and
Bradman with 12.
Tendulkar however, holds the record for the most number of centuries, which
are 49. He also holds the record for the most number of runs in Test match cricket
and in one day internationals. In the Test matches, he had recently got to 14000
Test match runs in the same Bangalore Test match.
