Bangladesh will be hoping to restore pride in their ranks when
they host South Africa in the upcoming South Africa tour on Bangladesh
starting with a three day warm up match for South Africa against TBC on the
19th of February. Both these sides come into this series on the back of long
grueling cricket serieses, although the end results for each side was drastically
different in the past few months.
Bangladesh saw the highs of the 20-20 World Cup and the ICC
Cricket World Cup get drowned in the wake of some demoralizing defeats by
New Zealand in the two test series there. Bangladesh have come
under fire from the ICC for their consistently below par test performances and
are in real danger of losing their status as a test playing nation. Bangladesh
were comprehensively trounced by New Zealand 2-0 with both the matches ending
in big innings defeat for the touring side. However, Dave Whatmore and his troops
remain optimistic of better results at home against the South Africans. Bangladesh
have been decent at home and though they are yet to register a test victory
against any other cricket side currently playing test cricket, their performances
at home have been much more convincing as compared to their away day blues.
Much of Bangladesh's hopes will depend on the top order batting of Skipper Mohammad Ashraful along with the swing and pace of Mortaza as the Asian lions look
to put one across the side they defeated in the ICC World Cup this year.
South Africa come into this series with a real sense of belief
that they are now fit to close in on Australia in the ICC Rankings. The Proteas
are currently second in the rankings and with Australia no longer looking the
mighty invincible force they once were, the South Africans will be hoping to
finally establish their dominance on the cricketing scene after being second
best for so long. South Africa come into this series on the back of eight straight
wins over the West Indies on a trot at home in different versions of the game.
While the Windies are currently a mere shadow of the world beating heroes of
the 80's , it still takes a lot of courage and endeavor to get past them in
a three match test series after they have taken the lead. However, South Africa did manage to do that and followed the 2-1 triumph in the test series
with a fantastic 5-0 win in the one dayers. South Africa will be without retired
fast bowler Shaun Pollock while Herschelle Gibbs is dropped for this series
and will be relying on the young shoulders of Dale Steyn and Andre Nel to get
past Bangladesh at home.
