Gautam Gambhir and Wasim Jaffer gave the Indians a solid start as the tourists
reached 127 for 2 at lunch on the second day of their three-day cricket warm up
match against Sri Lanka 'A' at Grace Road here today.
Jaffer made a solid 48 while Gambhir was unbeaten on 45, the 85-run partnership
between the two leaving the Indians only 139 runs behind the Lankan total.
Captain Rahul Dravid on 10 was the other not out batsman at the break.
Jaffer was batting well until he was caught at mid-on by Akalanka Ganegama
when he tried to go over the top.
Resuming the day at their overnight score of 25 for 1, both Jaffer and Gambhir
enjoyed the conditions as they batted without much discomfort.
Gambhir flashed and missed a few in the first couple of overs before he found
his touch.
However, Jaffer looked in brilliant touch as he played some gorgeous drives
on either sides of the wicket.
Jaffer's back foot cover drive off Ganegama was a beauty and then there was
a fine glance that was a gem off pacer Dammika Prasad.
Gambhir lofted off spinner Lokuarachchi over midwicket to the boundary. Then,
just before lunch, he smashed Prasad for two consecutive fours through extra
cover.
