Senior Pakistani batsman Younis Khan will not be offered captaincy of the
national team ever again in the future, PCB chief Naseem Ashraf
said.
Ashraf said though Younis would be considered as a player, he won't be offered
to lead the Pakistan team ever.
"As far as his playing for Pakistan is concerned he will be considered
whenever he makes himself available to play for the national team. But I don't
think he will ever be offered the captaincy again," he said.
Younis had refused the captaincy after the World Cup when Inzamam
ul Haq stepped down as skipper after Pakistan were eliminated in the first
round of the mega event.
Younis cited poor form, personal pressures and unhappiness
with the situation in Pakistan cricket as reasons for refusing the captaincy.
Ashraf, a big supporter of Younis, had earlier convinced him
to lead the side after he initially refused to do so just before the Champions
Trophy last year.
After the World Cup, Ashraf again offered the captaincy
to Younis, who turned it down.
"To be honest, I was disappointed when Younis said he
didn't want the captaincy," Ashraf said.
The PCB chief said the disappointment was there in him since
Younis had been groomed to take over from Inzamam and he felt a lot of investment
made by the board in the batsman had gone waste as far as a future captain was
concerned.
"There is no question of taking any disciplinary action
against Younis for refusing to lead the team because as a individual he has
a right to his own opinion. But after what happened he will not get the captaincy
again," he said.
Younis, presently playing for Yorkshire county club,
will be available for Pakistan after September 23.
