Indian middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh has said that the Indian captain
MS Dhoni was like a 'bomb waiting explode' before the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup this year. Yuvraj, who had gone on to win the man of the series
award in the World Cup and was also at the other end when Dhoni hit the winning
runs to claim the World Cup, said that after not getting too many runs through
the tournament, the team had expected Dhoni to get something big in the final.
Yuvraj also added that despite his continuous failures in the tournament, he
did not look like giving up on his practice which he did with utmost rigour.
Yuvraj was writing for the BCCI in their newsletter.
Yuvraj also reminded the fans that the reason why Dhoni batted in a position
ahead of him in the batting order was to maintain the left-right handed combination.
He also added that Dhoni played one of the best knocks that he had seen in his
career.
India were struggling at 114/3 with the loss of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli but with Yuvraj due to come in to bat at the number
five position, it was Dhoni who walked in. He scored an unbeaten half-century
to guide the side to a win, hitting a six to finish the tournament off. Dhoni
scored 91 and it was his partnership with Gautam Gambhir, who had made
97 that saw the side through to the World Cup win.
According to Yuvraj, Dhoni's excellence lies in the fact that he handles pressure
rather well and that was the reason why he was able to guide the team to a win.
Speaking about the tournament in general from the Indian perspective, Yuvraj
said that it was their loss to South Africa that turned things around. He said
that the side hadn't done well with the ball and in the field in that game and
realised that they had to change things around after that. He also said that
with respect to their batting, the biggest problem was their middle-order and
the team decided to build on a stand in the middle of the innings.
In the same article, the captain MS Dhoni said that the win over the Aussies
in the quarter-final was the turning point for him. India chased down
a difficult score in the quarter-finals at Ahmedabad to book their place in
the semi-finals against Pakista.
