Kolkata Knight Riders' run of seven consecutive wins came to an end when they
lost to Mumbai Indians by 27 runs on Saturday. However, the string of victories
has lifted them into second place with a very safe bet of making it to the playoffs.
The defeat in the last match would also have served them a timely reminder to
not take things for granted. While the openers failed, Jacques Kallis
was at his usual best while Yusuf Pathan also struck some lusty blows.
The bowlers however were slightly off-color as the management decided to test
their bench strength. Overall, the team does not have major worries and should
not be drastically concerned after just one loss.
Chennai Super Kings have 15 points but have played one game more than the other
teams. Therefore, a win for them is considerably imperative as they would not
want to leave their chances to permutations and combinations. Their win over
Delhi Daredevils would have given them immense confidence as their under-fire
bowling performed well to restrict the total to 114 before the batsmen chased
the total down in less than 16 overs. Ben Hilfenhaus has been sublime
ever since taking a beating in the final over of that fated defeat to Mumbai
Indians. In addition, the likes of Albie Morkel, Suresh Raina and MS
Dhoni provide plenty of options on paper, but remains to be seen whether they
can translate that on to on field results.
Kolkata, the hosts for the match, won the previous meeting between the two teams
by five wickets with two balls to spare.
