The stage is set for an epic battle between two of Asian cricket's stalwarts when
Pakistan take on Sri Lanka in a Super four encounter of the Asia
Cup in Karachi on the 29th of June 2008. Both these sides have had their
own worries both on and off the field and with India looking the arch favourites
to capture a final spot of the Asia Cup, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will know that
the result of this clash will hold paramount importance in the final outcome of
the series.

Pakistan will be disappointed to be beaten by India so comprehensively
after piling up a mammoth score of 299. While the batting looks impressive with
the likes of Salman Butt, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf and Sohaib
Malik all in sublime touch, it is their bowling which has let them down over
and over again. The injury to Umar Gul coupled with the suspensions of Sohaib
Akthar and Mohammad Asif has meant that Pakistan's pace attack is done to its
bare bones and they will need Sohail Tanvir to lead the line from the front
if they are to stand a chance against the marauding Lankans. Another concern
for Pakistan will be the form of belligerent all rounder Shahid Afridi. Afridi
has looked woefully out of touch for the best part of a year now and his form
will be a huge concern for the Pakistan cricket team who desperately need the
batting to tick if they are to stand a chance of securing a place in the finals
of the Asia Cup. On the positive end , Pakistan have won their last four
matches against Sri Lanka and given their track record at Karachi, they might
just fancy yet another upset this time around.
Sri Lanka will be happy to get out from the shackles of underachievement in
the CB Series with two resounding victories over Bangladesh and
UAE. The batting has been in sublime touch hammering over 300 runs in
each of their innings and with Sanath Jayasurya still going strong, the Lankans
will know that they can upstage any bowling plans with some calculated risks
up the order. The likes of Kumara Sangakarra and Mahela Jayawardena, fresh from
their exploits with Kings XI Punjab in the IPL have been in fine fettle as well
and they will be looking to make the most of a fragile Pakistani bowling line
up. On the bowling department, Mendis has been one of the biggest finds of the
summer for the Lankans. The Lanky off spinner picked up a fiver against UAE
and his combination with Muttiah Muralitharan will be a challenge for the Pakistani
batting line up this coming Sunday 29th June 2008 at Karachi, Pakistan.
