The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today said it has settled
a dispute with sports gear firm Nike on sponsorship issue, adjusting 1.228 million
dollars compensation claim put on the Board after making some discounts.
"There is no outstanding issue, everything has been resolved between BCCI
and Nike," BCCI Vice-President Lalit Modi said on phone from Mumbai.
Asked about the compensation claim made by Nike on alleged
violation of contract by the Board and the cricket team, Modi said: "We
have not agreed on the entire amount...We have given some series by series discount
after making adjustments on their claims.
"I do not know the exact amount involved for the settlement as it was
arrived at four months back," he said.
Stating that in any long-term relationship there may come some
strain at sometime, Modi said the two partners have no issues anymore. Modi
will be in Delhi along with BCCI chief Sharad Pawar to outline Board's
future projects on Thursday.
Modi's comments assume importance in the wake of reports of
Nike, which is facing a case slapped by rival Adidas in MRTPC over the usage
of brand Sachin Tendulkar, slapping a claim of 1.228 million dollars
on BCCI for as compensation incurred due to alleged violation of contract.
Nike India Marketing Head Sanjay Gangopadhyay was not
available for comments. However, a Nike spokesperson declined to comment on
the on the issue saying it was a matter between the two parties.
